If you manage a hospital, clinic, dental practice or laboratory in the UAE, you have probably heard the terms AMC and PPM. They are often used together, but they are not the same thing. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right maintenance plan, control costs and keep your medical equipment ready for patients.

What is PPM?

Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) is scheduled care for your equipment. Instead of waiting for something to break, a biomedical engineer visits on a planned schedule to inspect, clean, test and calibrate each device. The goal is to find small problems before they turn into breakdowns.

A typical PPM visit includes:

  • Visual inspection and cleaning
  • Functional testing against manufacturer specifications
  • Electrical safety testing
  • Calibration and replacement of wear parts where needed
  • A service report for each device

How often PPM is needed depends on the type of device, how heavily it is used and what the manufacturer recommends. A busy patient monitor or autoclave may need more frequent attention than equipment used occasionally.

What is an AMC?

An Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) is a yearly agreement with a service provider that covers the maintenance of your equipment. Most AMCs include PPM visits, but they usually go further, adding corrective repairs, priority breakdown support and complete maintenance records under one contract.

In simple terms: PPM is an activity, and an AMC is a contract that often includes that activity along with other services.

AMC vs PPM at a Glance

  • PPM: scheduled preventive visits, inspection, testing and calibration.
  • AMC: a yearly plan that typically includes PPM, plus corrective repair and priority support.
  • PPM only suits facilities that already have an in-house team for repairs.
  • An AMC suits facilities that want one partner and predictable annual costs.

Which One Does Your Clinic Need?

Ask yourself a few practical questions:

  • Do you have biomedical staff who can handle breakdowns, or do you rely on outside support?
  • How costly is downtime for you? For a dental clinic, a broken chair means cancelled appointments.
  • Do you prefer a fixed annual budget, or paying for each repair as it happens?
  • Do you need organised maintenance records for regulatory inspections?

Most small and mid-sized clinics in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah choose an AMC, because it combines preventive care and repairs in one plan and keeps records ready for MOH, DHA and DOH inspections. Larger hospitals with in-house biomedical teams sometimes contract PPM only for specialised equipment.

Why Preventive Maintenance Matters

Whichever plan you choose, regular preventive maintenance protects patient safety, extends equipment life and reduces emergency repair costs. It also means fewer surprises on busy clinic days.
